3/21

Morning started off cold as hell again, but not as cold as yesterday. Didn't sleep great, my body isn't used to going to bed around 9:00pm yet. Listening to some grateful dead around 3:00am and that really put me into a deep slumber till 8:00am when the sun finally peaked over the mountains.

There were around 20 of us at the shelter and one by one they started to get on with their day. My buddy and I were almost the last to leave around 10:00am. We aren't really in a rush to get anywhere. We had plans on hiking 13 miles to the Gooch Mountain Shelter, with a backup plan of the Devil's Kitchen campsite 12 miles in if we didn't feel ready.

It was pretty nice out today, so we were cruising at around 2 mph. Elevation was easier than the approach trail for sure. A couple good climbs but still reminded me a lot of hiking in the Belknaps. Trails. Georgia has got a lot of saddlebacks and  the trails tend to curve gently around the mountain.

Took a couple pictures of the new plant growth since yesterday was the first day of spring.
We arrived at the Gooch Mountain Shelter around 5:00pm and it was packed with people. There was a little bit of space left in the shelter but no more tent spots. An AMC volunteer informed us that there were plenty of spots available down the road at the Gooch Gap crossing. We weren't thrilled at the idea of hiking an extra 1.5 miles but we still had plenty in the tank left, so we went on our way again.

Found a cute little.campsite for the night in a field, met Steve who gave us a trash bag to dump trash in and also got to catch up with Nacho Jim, who is hiking the AT for the 2nd with his dog, Dalia.

Filled up on water and was ready to turn in for the night when two car campers, who's names I have already forgotten, offered us some PBRs and a game a bocce. Never one to turn down a PBR or a quick game I humbly obliged. They had both hiked the trail 10 years prior and were in the area looking to do some trail magic and revisit some old memories. Not a bad day overall

See ya lovelies ;)
